Background of the Study:
Traditional beliefs and practices profoundly shape health behaviors in many communities. In Esan Central, Edo State, cultural norms influence maternal health decisions, including prenatal care, childbirth practices, and postpartum care. These beliefs, transmitted across generations, often lead women to rely on herbal remedies, spiritual rituals, and home-based care alongside modern medical services (Omoregie, 2023; Eboh, 2024). While modern healthcare provides evidence-based treatments, traditional beliefs sometimes result in divergent health practices, affecting maternal outcomes (Idris, 2023). This study explores the impact of traditional beliefs on maternal health choices, aiming to understand how these cultural factors interact with healthcare-seeking behavior.

Statement of the Problem:
In Esan Central, traditional beliefs significantly influence maternal health choices, often resulting in a preference for home-based care and traditional remedies over modern healthcare services (Omoregie, 2023). This divergence may lead to suboptimal health outcomes. The lack of integrated approaches between traditional and modern healthcare calls for an investigation into these influences (Eboh, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the influence of traditional beliefs on maternal health choices.
  2. To evaluate the impact of traditional health practices on maternal outcomes.
  3. To recommend culturally sensitive strategies for integrating traditional beliefs with modern healthcare.

Research Questions:

  1. How do traditional beliefs influence maternal health choices in Esan Central?
  2. What impact do traditional health practices have on maternal outcomes?
  3. What strategies can effectively integrate traditional beliefs with modern healthcare services?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional beliefs significantly influence maternal health choices.
  2. Reliance on traditional health practices is associated with varied maternal outcomes.
  3. Culturally sensitive interventions that integrate traditional beliefs with modern healthcare improve maternal outcomes.

Significance of the Study:
This study provides valuable insights into the relationship between traditional beliefs and maternal health choices. Its findings will guide policymakers and healthcare providers in designing culturally appropriate interventions that bridge traditional practices and modern medicine to enhance maternal health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to assessing the influence of traditional beliefs on maternal health choices in Esan Central, Edo State. It focuses on maternal health practices, cultural beliefs, and healthcare integration, with limitations including potential biases in self-reported data and exclusion of other health determinants.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Traditional Beliefs: Culturally inherited values and practices influencing behavior.
  2. Maternal Health Choices: Decisions related to prenatal, childbirth, and postpartum care.
  3. Modern Healthcare Services: Evidence-based medical care provided by formal healthcare institutions.
